Two days allow you to experience the city's highlights without rushing.
Three days give you time to slow down, explore beyond the famous landmarks and truly appreciate Florence's unique atmosphere.
The right answer depends on what role Florence plays in your journey through Italy.

Many travellers assume Florence deserves less time simply because it's smaller.
That's often the first mistake. Florence isn't a city built around quantity.
It's built around quality.
Everything is closer.
Walking is easy.
Distances are short.
But that doesn't mean you'll experience everything in less time.
Quite the opposite.
Florence invites you to slow down.
The biggest mistake travellers make
Many itineraries treat Florence as a one-night stop between Rome and Venice.
Technically... It works.
In reality... You barely scratch the surface.
You arrive.
Sleep.
Visit the Duomo.
See Ponte Vecchio.
Leave.
That's not experiencing Florence.
That's collecting landmarks.
My Recommendation
If Florence is your first introduction to Tuscany...
Don't rush it.
Give yourself time to enjoy the city beyond the famous attractions.
Some of the best moments happen away from the queues.
When do 3 days make sense?
More often than people realise. A third day gives you freedom.
Freedom to spend longer inside a museum. Freedom to enjoy a relaxed lunch.
Freedom to climb to Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset without worrying about catching the next train.
Sometimes, Freedom is what transforms a good trip into a memorable one.
Common Mistake
Many travellers add Pisa as a day trip simply because it's famous.
Before adding another destination, ask yourself whether you'd enjoy an extra day discovering Florence instead.
Very often the answer is yes.
What if you want to explore Tuscany?
Florence is one of the best bases for discovering Tuscany.
Depending on your plans, you may wish to stay an extra day or two. Not because Florence itself requires more time. But because it allows you to combine city life with vineyards, hilltop villages and some of Italy's most beautiful countryside.
That's when your itinerary starts working together instead of feeling like separate destinations.
Final Thought
The question isn't:
"How many days do I need in Florence?"
It's:
"How much time do I want to give myself to enjoy it?"
Those are two very different questions. And they often lead to very different itineraries.
